Tools for administration and accounting on Linux?     Fri 4th Jul 2008 18:03:26

Hi everyone!

I newly started listing items here on Delcampe. I am looking for software for administration (and accounting) of sales on Delcampe which meet the needs of professional sellers. The features offered in "My Delcampe" are helpful, but they're surely not enough when it comes to professional selling with higher volumes.

I have to add that I'm using Linux and that I need "mature software", meaning that I neither have the knowledge nor the time to develop something on my own (e.g. writing macros for Open Office Calc).

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance! :-)

Best regards,
Klaus

This is not the first time that there is a conflict between whether delcampe is for collectors virtually swapping stamps, and amateur sellers with a personal touch, or for big professional businesses (usually American). Most of the French seem to be in the former category, and that seems to be what delcampe was originally based on .

Wouldn't you make it easier for yourself if you didn't use Linux ?

hello klaus,

my suggestion is to contact sebastien directly using the 'help and contact' link above. as you are a well versed software user, you can discuss the ramifications and needs of your specific system. i am a user of microsoft and have no training in linux or other systems. and welcome to delcampe.

amities,

Hi Rogermo,

"This is not the first time that there is a conflict between whether delcampe is for collectors virtually swapping stamps, and amateur sellers with a personal touch, or for big professional businesses (usually American). Is this topic really discussed as an either-or question? If yes, then in my opinion this would be a pity because I am convinced that Delcampe and its users could only benefit from a place where there is space for both. Furthermore, being a commercial seller doesn't necessarily mean that one makes the big bucks, at least not here in Germany. Many of the professionals here are doing their business on a part-time basis, and even the full-time sellers usually have to work very hard to make a living from the business. There ARE a few exceptions, but these are just this, exceptions.

"Wouldn't you make it easier for yourself if you didn't use Linux ?"

Not really. Both systems, Windows and Linux, have their pros and cons. Linux usually suits my personal needs better than Windows. But there is this one big problem with Linux that it sometimes can be hard to find software for very specific needs. I'm not a fanatic Linux freak and I have to admit that sometimes Linux isn't easy to deal with, but in general I'm quite pleased with it.

Hi cajunsr.!

Thanks for the suggestion!

You are right, maybe it's indeed the best to contact Sebastien or Christine (German community manager) directly. I already thought of this myself, but I'm hesitant because I think their time is really precious.

But on the other hand I possibly can make a suggestion for further improvement of the website. I guess I will suggest an additional tool designed for the specific needs of professional sellers. I wouldn't mind if such a tool would cost a reasonable monthly fee, for a really helpful tool I would pay gladly.

Liebster Cajunsr,

You are in danger of revealing the better known fact that your father was of French descent and proud of having fought the Germans !

Wir wissen noch nicht, ob es Evelyne oder Christine sei, die krank ist.
Ich wünsche euch einen schönen weekend.

Mit freundlichem Grüß,

Rogermo
