Saint Cyril - (827 - February 14, 869) was a Byzantine Greek monk, scholar, theologian, and linguist. He is best known today for his work in Christianising the Slavs and, with his brother Saint Methodius, is credited with devising the Glagolithic and rarely also with devising the Cyrillic alphabet. He was known during his life as Constantine ; the Greek name Cyril seems to have been given to him only shortly before his death, if not after. Together with his brother Saint Methodius they are the patron saints of Europe.

Saint Methodius - (b. Thessaloniki, Byzantine Empire, 826; d. in Great Moravia, April 6, 885) was a Byzantine Greek scholar, archbishop of Great Moravia, and the main translator of the Bible into Old Church Slavonic using the Glagolitic alphabet created by his brother and collaborator Saint Cyril. Since 1980 the two brothers are the patron saints of Europe.
