The stamp shows slave scribes on a painting from the tomb of Seshem-nefer III constructed near the Pyramid of Cheops of Giza around 2420 BC. A historic review of the development of mail conveyance was the focus of the activities around the Day of the Stamp in 1984. The need to exchange messages among people is as old as mankind itself. Technical progress reducing or even eliminating distances, however, is a rather young phenomenon. Telephony and telegraphy are inventions of the 19th century, and we can hardly speak of regular, fairly functioning postal services before the 18th century. Thus, the only somewhat reliable communications medium was man himself - the messenger. Testimony of an organised mail conveyance system, including facilities very similar to present-day post offices, exists from ancient Egypt. Before the development of modern postal services, however, the highest standard was reached by the Roman cursus publicus. It provided the basis of the well functioning Roman postal system and was maintained up to the 5th century AD and, in the Eastern Roman Empire, even longer
