Europe 1964
In summer 1959, 23 postal and telecommunications administrations from 19 countries convened in Montreux to establish the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (Conférence européenne des postes et des télécommunications - CEPT). The basic idea was to co-operate at a European level in order to solve administrative and operational problems. Further objectives of CEPT include the harmonisation and practical improvement of operational services as well as the exchange of information and officials. Because three more European countries joined CEPT in 1963, it now comprises 26 administrations from 22 European countries. Since the founding meeting in Montreux, tangible results have been achieved, such as the simplification of prime costs with a view to improving and harmonising European postal charges, simplifications in the exchange of mail and the organisation of training courses for European officials. As a clear symbol of the joint efforts and of the European unity to be achieved, the CEPT countries issued a "EUROPA" stamp with the same motif for all the administrations of the member states in order to celebrate the fifth anniversary of CEPT. The stamp shows a stylised daisy with the CEPT logo in its centre and 22 petals standing for the member states.
