125th Anniversary of the TÜV Austria´s Technical Inspection Organization
An important matter of concern throughout every community is industrial safety. People have a fundamental right to coexist in safe harmony with technology. Furthermore, the objective must focus on making optimal use of positive technological aspects and minimizing to the extent possible the negative ones, particularly the hazards. Prominent men from Austria´s industrial sector were also of this view: an organization was established in 1872 to inspect steam and pressure systems during last century´s great wave of industrialization. In those days 50 people were killed on average in boiler explosions every month. Manufacturers and operators of such dangerous machinery met within the organization and together laid down the standards of quality assurance for the construction, production, and operation of pressure systems, which minimized dangers surprisingly quickly. In keeping up with industrial development, the organization established in those days soon focused on inspecting elevators, cranes, hydraulic equipment, mechanical gates, motor vehicles, electrical systems and appliances of all kinds, environmental protection, electromagnetic tolerance, and much more. Today Austria´s Technical Inspection Organization (TÜV) employs a variety of specialists from very different fields who carry out their activities in 10 offices throughout Austria. The degree of versatility is apparent just from the description of the fields: elevators, pressure systems, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, transport, and medical engineering, environment / energy /transportation, materials testing / technical physics, certification/management systems/trade regulations. In addition, there are domestic and foreign subsidiary companies in Athens, Budapest, and Munich. It is the one accredited in the most specialties and Austria´s authorized inspection, supervision, and certification office reported in Brussels. For 125 years Austria´s TÜV has been the Austrian economy´s certified, independent partner in matters of technical safety, environmental protection, and resource management. From the very beginning it has had it´s finger on the pulse of the economy and knows which technical services it requires. The Post & Telekom Austria brings forth a special issue stamp on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the TÜV. The stamp´s portrayal is symbolic.
