Sports - Runner
Until 1959, the Austrian Postal and Telecommunications Administration had issued only few stamps with sports-inspired motifs, such as the FIS stamps (1933, 1936 and 1958) and the Olympic stamps (1948 and 1952). The present stamp not only symbolises track and field sports but also all forms of events permitting exact measuring during competitions, such as swimming, rowing or fencing. In this way, it stands symbolically for all types of sport focused on the individual´s performance. The modern development of sports was decisively influenced by the way in which the Renaissance thinkers once more embraced the ancient Greek concept of Man. Today, sports are a favourite pastime of all strata of the population, no longer the exclusive domain of a few amateurs or top athletes continuously struggling to set new records. Rather, sports fulfil an important task in safeguarding national health and offer a welcome compensation for the occupation-related stress that characterises our era.
Sports - Ball Games
In the past, ball games were considered simple pastimes without complicated rules. Ball games with a more elaborate set of rules first began to spread throughout Europe in the 16th century. It was above all students who as part of their regular curriculum pursued a racket-and-ball game that constituted a precursor of modern-day tennis. Special halls, called "ball houses" were constructed, mainly near the residences of local sovereigns, since these cities also housed universities. Such an institution also gave its name to Vienna´s "Ballhausplatz" square. Soccer, which only was given fixed rules in the second half of the 19th century, was an English import. The present stamp motif stands as a symbol of another aspect of sports: the team experience. The feeling of belonging together, of serving a common goal, fulfils a social function and constitutes a valuable pedagogical element in the development of the individual´s personality.
