Résumé:
Tout commence un jour de fête des mères, dans la paisible petite ville du Massachusetts, où vivent Karen et Greg Newhall avec Jenny, leur fille adoptive. Pourquoi faut-il que ce jour-là surgisse Linda, la vraie mère, la mère maudite aussi, qui a abandonné Jenny à sa naissance ?
S'imagine-t-elle qu'elle va récupérer son enfant ?

Mais le malaise tourne au cauchemar lorsque, le lendemain matin, le cadavre de Linda est retrouvé dans une benne à ordures. Un cauchemar que le lecteur traverse, jusqu'à la dernière page, sans pouvoir s'arrêter.
