L’anno successivo, il pastore valdese Paolo Calvino iniziò la sua opera destinata ad avere una grande importanza nel Ticino; residente a Como, egli predicava a Chiasso e dal 1877 si recava a Lugano una volta al mese, per i culti e la catechesi dei giovani. Nel 1882 si installò a Locarno il pastore Gaetano Barbieri, che esercitò il suo ministero anche a Novaggio, dove era stato chiamato dai due primi riformati del villaggio malcantonese: Battista Delmenico e Pietro Demarta. L’anno seguente, il pastore valdese Paolo Calvino prese residenza a Biasca, dove, già il 22 novembre, aprì una scuola evangelica. Gli allievi furono inizialmente 9, guidati dalla maestra Tellini (incaricata dalla stessa Società d’aiuto di Basilea), a cui si aggiungerà poi una seconda maestra biaschese Ferrari, in grado di «impartire l’insegnamento in lingua italiana e tedesca». Oltre alla scuola evangelica, a Biasca vi era anche una «scuola infantile dove confluivano bambini di età inferiore ai sei anni, previo pagamento di una tassa mensile di un franco a testa. Ovviamente nella scuola infantile non s’imparava a leggere e scrivere, ma i bambini si divertivano in un locale ampio e sano, sotto la sorveglianza di una persona di fiducia.» Dal 1883, ogni mese, Calvino si ritroverà a discutere problemi di interesse comune con i colleghi Haarbeck e Barbieri. Tra i pastori di Bellinzona e di Biasca, ci fu l’accordo che il pastore Calvino si sarebbe occupato dei fedeli di lingua italiana, mentre il pastore Haarbeck di quelli di lingua tedesca: a loro insaputa questa distinzione tra le due sfere linguistiche nella comunità protestante rimase ancorata fino alla fine degli anni 50-60 di questo secolo, quando nasce il seme che porterà alla «Federazione delle Comunità evangeliche riformate del canton Ticino.» La Società d’aiuto alle Chiese evangeliche di Basilea ha sempre sostenuto le due Comunità separate dalla lingua, anche con pastori diversi; questo stato di cose si mantenne anche quando la Chiesa evangelica di lingua italiana spostò nel 1899 la sua sede a Lugano.
