Ci sono diversi motivi comuni presenti nel design delle cartoline americane, la maggior parte modellati dalle pratiche di produzione e dalle leggi in vigore al momento della produzione. Questi sono stati identificati dai deltiologi e raggruppati insieme in quelle che vengono comunemente chiamate epoche o periodi che descrivono lo stile o il metodo di produzione di una cartolina. Sebbene le caratteristiche di queste epoche, come la schiena divisa, siano presenti anche in altri paesi, le date di produzione possono differire. Ad esempio, le cartoline "divise sul retro" furono introdotte in Gran Bretagna nel 1902, cinque anni prima degli Stati Uniti.[3] L'età dell'oro delle cartoline è comunemente definita negli Stati Uniti come iniziata intorno al 1905, con un picco tra il 1907 e il 1910 e terminata con la prima guerra mondiale.
