-This matched PRE-1750s MATCHED PAIR-ANTIQUE BRONZE LANTAKA “RAIL” CANNONS
was made over 100 years ago. This pair of 110 inch cannons was recovered in South East Asia and dates from the 18th century and was most likely made in Brunei by the Portuguese. These are made in the traditional Lantaka fashion with a flared muzzle, post and notch sights, and is designed as a large swivel gun. Each weighs approx-150 pounds with a 2.5 inch bore opening and would have been fixed to a vessel traveling the waters of the Asian archipelagos to fend off attackers or perhaps offensively, depending on the mentality of the crew. Villagers considered any vessel not fitted with cannons ill-equipped due to the prevalence of pirates and head hunters. Cannons were often passed down from generation to generation and were used for ceremonial purposes such as signaling an important event such as a birth, weddings as well as for military use against enemies. Some of these canons were used for century’s right up to and even during the Filipino Insurrection in the early 20th century. Many have been lost in jungles, buried or dumped to sea.
These guns were primarily used as “currency” for trading for spices. The Portuguese Lantaka were usually cast in Malaysia or Borneo (what is now known as Brunei) up and through the early 1600s. They were not as refined as the Dutch but rather they set the standard for design which the Dutch would later replicate, embellishing them with intricate and various designs. These cannons can occasionally be viewed in the more remote villages throughout Indonesia and Malaysia archipelago.
The condition of these 2-cannons is very good to excellent condition with no damage for their age. These museum quality cannons have beautiful designs the full length of the cannon. These cannons have verdigris overall and as such has a shipwrecked appearance that would make a great display piece. These cannons come with 2-custom made HARD STANDS. These are also made of cast bronze and depict cradled hands holding the cannons.
THESE ARE VERY RARE IN THAT THEY ARE 9FT IN LENGTH AND MOST ARE FROM 2-6FT IN LENGTH.
