Cet ouvrage est le septième d’une collection composée de
10 volumes, sortis au Japon sous le nom de « Complete world of
Dragon Ball vol .7». Seul le premier volume a été publié en France
avec celui-ci. On appelle ce genre d’ouvrage des «
daizenshuus ». Les précédents titres sont plutôt des arts books
composés donc essentiellement d’illustrations inédites
réalisées par Akira Toriyama.
Comme l’indique assez clairement le titre français, ce
livre n’est ni plus ni moins une encyclopédie concernant
l’univers de Dragon Ball. A l’intérieur on y trouve une
masse d’informations faisant référence au manga et à la série
animé. Aucune référence ou presque à Dragon Ball GT (juste trois
pages) puisque le livre est publié pour la première fois en 1996,
année de sortie de cette même série. De l’atlas géographique
à la présentation d’une multitude de produits dérivés, en
passant par la chronologie des évènements présents dans le manga et
le dessin animé, ce dictionnaire est très complet dans les sujets
abordés. De plus, on y retrouve également des informations non
développées dans le manga, comme le fonctionnement du monde dans
Dragon Ball (société, culture, races), sa représentation (monde
vivant, enfer, paradis) ou les niveaux de puissances de certaines
transformations. La liste des différents personnages est
extrêmement complète. Le moindre personnage, même visible quelques
secondes à l’écran, y est décrit. La même remarque peut être
également faite concernant la liste des objets.
Bien que l’ouvrage soit signé par Akira Toriyama, on ne
sait pas dans quelle mesure il s’est impliqué dans la
rédaction. Voici un extrait des propos qu’il tient dans la
préface : « la réalisation des précédents ouvrages sur Dragon Ball
s’était avérée très difficile pour les concepteurs, mais avec
celui-ci je crois qu’ils ont côtoyé l’enfer… ».
De plus, lorsque ce livre a été rédigé on sait qu’il
souhaitait en terminer avec Dragon Ball et passer à autre chose.
Ces deux éléments laissent penser qu’il a suivi de loin la
rédaction de cette encyclopédie et que les rédacteurs ont
interprété voire inventé certaines choses qui ne sont pas présentes
dans le manga. En effet, ce livre n’est pas exempt de tout
reproche. Des erreurs ou incohérences se sont glissées, laissant
parfois perplexe le lecteur connaissant très bien l’univers.
Difficile de savoir s’il s’agit d’erreurs de
traduction ou de véritables erreurs présentent dans la version
originale. Par exemple, la description de Son Goten débute par « il
naquit pendant les combats du Cell Game ». La liste des puissances
représentant certains personnages est aussi à prendre avec beaucoup
de recul par rapport à certains chiffres annoncés.
Malgré ces coquilles qui restent tout de même relativement
marginales, le dictionnaire Dragon Ball est très intéressant pour
tout fan qui se respecte. Certains propos proviennent tout de même
directement d’Akira Toriyama notamment lorsque la première
personne du singulier est employée. Le livre est très utile si
l’on désire rapidement retrouver une donnée sur un sujet
précis et regorge d’informations intéressantes.
