Valenciennes, Honiton, Bucks Point, Reticella, Brussels Bobbin Lace, Blonde, Bedfordshire Maltese, Hollie Point and Carrickmacross . . . Why did all these varieties of lace develop as they did? When were they first made? Who made them? How were they marketed? Who bought them and wore them? These are some of the questions asked and answered in this complete and authoritative study.
No major book on lace has been published in English since the revised edition of Mrs Palliser's History of Lace appeared in 1902, yet the intervening period has seen enormous strides made in the study and understanding of the lace industry and of its relationship to the history of dress, to textiles and to the development of the decorative arts in general. In writing about lace in the context of fashionable dress and the development of styles and movements of taste, Santina Levey has drawn on extensive researches in these related fields. For lace only existed because fashionable dress required it and the many varieties only came into existence because the lace-makers were able to respond to changing demands. On the occasions when they did not or could not respond, whole sections of the industry collapsed.
This book covers the period from the early sixteenth-century to the First World War and is arranged chronologically to accommodate the underlying changes in fashionable dress and in the lace worn with it, but, within each chapter, the different types of lace are dealt with one by one. Greatest attention is given to the leading fashion laces but less important laces are also described; these range from simple domestic trimmings and cheap copies worn lower down the social scale, to 'fossilized' versions of once fashionable laces which continued to be made for peasant communities and for some conservative societies in the New World. The distinguishing technical features of each lace are described and particular attention is given to the close copies of the historical lace which were made in the late nineteenth century.
Although not designed as a how-to-do-it manual, the many enlarged details included in the illustrations and the magnified technical details in the Glossary would enable the experienced lace-maker to recreate a number of the patterns, while the rich variety of designs should be a source of inspiration to those working across the wholes spectrum of textile and flat-pattern designing.
The book is fully indexed and the technical terms and names used in the text are gathered together in a GLOSSARY for ease of reference. The Glossary also includes and explains terms of doubtful validity which are not used in the text but which appear in many older books on the subject.

Geen grootboek over kant is gepubliceerd in het Engels sinds de herziene editie van de geschiedenis van mevrouw Palliser van kant verscheen in 1902, maar de tussenliggende periode heeft gezien enorme vooruitgang geboekt in de studie en het begrip van de kant industrie en van haar relatie tot de geschiedenis van kleding, aan textiel en aan de ontwikkeling van de decoratieve Kunsten in het algemeen. In het schrijven over kant in de context van modieuze kleding en de ontwikkeling van stijlen en bewegingen van smaak, heeft Santina Levey getrokken op uitgebreide onderzoeken in deze aanverwante gebieden. Voorkant alleen bestond omdat modieuze jurk nodig is en de vele variëteiten kwam pas in het bestaan, omdat de kant-makers in staat waren om te reageren op veranderende eisen. Op de momenten dat ze niet of kon niet reageren, hele delen van de industrie ingestort.
Dit boek behandelt de periode vanaf het begin van de zestiende-eeuw tot de eerste WereldOorlog en is chronologisch gerangschikt naar de onderliggende veranderingen in de modieuze jurk en in de kant gedragen met haar tegemoet te komen, maar binnen elk hoofdstuk, de verschillende soorten kant worden behandeld met een voor een. Grootste aandacht wordt besteed aan de toonaangevende mode-veters, maar minder belangrijke veters zijn ook beschreven; Deze variëren van eenvoudige binnenlandse trimmen en goedkope kopieën gedragen lager in de sociale schaal, tot ' versteende ' versies van een keer modieuze veters die nog steeds worden gemaakt voor boerengemeenschappen en voor sommige conservatieve samenlevingen in de nieuwe wereld. De onderscheidende technische kenmerken van elk kant worden beschreven en bijzondere aandacht wordt besteed aan de nauwe kopieën van de historische kant die werden gemaakt in de late negentiende eeuw.
Hoewel niet ontworpen als een How-to-do-it-handleiding, de vele uitgebreide details opgenomen in de illustraties en de vergrote technische details in de WoordenLijst zou de ervaren kant-Maker in staat stellen een aantal van de patronen te herscheppen, terwijl de rijke verscheidenheid van ontwerpen moet een bron van inspiratie voor degenen die werkzaam zijn in het hele spectrum van textiel en platte-patroon ontwerpen.
Het boek wordt volledig geïndexeerd en de technische termen en namen die in de tekst worden gebruikt, worden verzameld in een woordenlijst voor het gemak van de referentie. De WoordenLijst bevat ook en verklaart termen van twijfelachtige geldigheid die niet worden gebruikt in de tekst, maar die verschijnen in veel oudere boeken over het onderwerp.

Pourquoi toutes ces variétés de dentelle se développent-elles comme elles l'ont fait? Quand ont-ils été faits pour la première fois? Qui les a faits? Comment ont-ils été commercialisés? Qui les a achetés et les a portés? Ce sont quelques-unes des questions posées et répondues dans cette étude complète et autoritaire.
Aucun grand livre sur la dentelle n'a été publié en anglais depuis l'édition révisée de l'histoire de la dentelle de Mme Palliser est apparu en 1902, mais la période d'intervention a vu d'énormes progrès réalisés dans l'étude et la compréhension de l'industrie de la dentelle et de sa relation avec le histoire de la robe, aux textiles et au développement des arts décoratifs en général. Par écrit sur la dentelle dans le contexte de la robe à la mode et le développement des styles et des mouvements de goût, Santino Levey a tiré sur des recherches approfondies dans ces domaines connexes. Pour la dentelle n'existait que parce que la robe à la mode l'exigeait et les nombreuses variétés ne sont entrés en existence que parce que les couturiers ont été en mesure de répondre aux demandes changeantes. À l'occasion où ils n'ont pas ou ne pouvaient pas répondre, des pans entiers de l'industrie se sont effondrés.
Ce livre couvre la période du début du XVIe siècle à la première guerre mondiale et est arrangé chronologiquement pour accueillir les changements sous-jacents dans la robe à la mode et dans la dentelle porté avec elle, mais, dans chaque chapitre, les différents types de dentelle sont traités avec un par un. La plus grande attention est accordée aux lacets de mode de pointe mais les lacets moins importants sont également décrits; ceux-ci vont des garnitures domestiques simples et des copies bon marché portées en bas de l'échelle sociale, aux versions «fossilisés» des lacets autrefois à la mode qui ont continué à être faites pour des communautés paysannes et pour quelques sociétés conservatrices dans le nouveau monde. Les caractéristiques techniques distinctives de chaque lacet sont décrites et une attention particulière est donnée aux copies étroites de la dentelle historique qui ont été faites à la fin du XIXe siècle.
Bien qu'il ne soit pas conçu comme un manuel de mode d'emploi, les nombreux détails élargis inclus dans les illustrations et les détails techniques agrandis dans le Glossaire permettraient au fabricant expérimenté de la dentelle de recréer un certain nombre de modèles, tandis que la riche variété de les conceptions devraient être une source d'inspiration pour ceux qui travaillent à travers le spectre entier du textile et de la conception plate-modèle.
Le livre est entièrement indexé et les termes techniques et les noms utilisés dans le texte sont rassemblés dans un glossaire pour faciliter la référence. Le Glossaire comprend également et explique les termes de validité douteuse qui ne sont pas utilisés dans le texte, mais qui apparaissent dans de nombreux livres plus anciens sur le sujet.
