Souvenir de la fête de l'inauguration des cloches du carillon les 7 - 8 - 9 juin 1924 à Saint-Quentin (Aisne)
Gustave Cantelon, doyen des carillonneurs exerçait son art depuis 1880. A la Garde nationale, à l'Harmonie municipale (1867-1922), professeur de chant, compositeur, instrumentiste à l'Orchestre du théâtre, à la Société philharmonique, Cantelon était partout. Après la Première Guerre mondiale, il se bat pour la restauration du carillon. Il disparaît en 1930, alors qu'il est toujours en pleine activité...
Le Carillon placé dans le campanile de l’Hôtel de Ville date de 1762. Il comprend trente cloches. Il joue à l’heure, au quart, à la demie et au trois quart, des airs des Puritains (Bellini), du Caïd (A. Thomas), du Près au Clercs (Hérold) et des Diamants de la Couronne (Auber). Un clavier installé sous les cloches mêmes permet de jouer tous les airs compatibles avec les ressources musicales qu’offre la sonnerie.
Le Carillon de Saint-Quentin est populaire dans toute la région, et la municipalité ne manque jamais d’associer ses chants joyeux aux fêtes et cérémonies publiques. (Pierre Désormaux, Journal de St-Quentin, 1904).
A l'origine le carillon comportait 28 cloches, il fut complété à 30 cloches à la demande de Gustave Cantelon en 1880.
