GRUSS VOM rhein / Lurlei 1900 The Lorelei (also spelled Loreley) (German pronunciation: is a rock on the eastern bank of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen, Germany, which soars some 120 metres above the waterline. It marks the narrowest part of the river between Switzerland and the North Sea. A very strong current and rocks below the waterline have caused many boat accidents there. Lorelei is also the name of a feminine water spirit, similar to mermaids or Rhine maidens, associated with this rock in popular folklore and in works of music, art and literature. Der Rhein (französisch Rhin, italienisch Reno, rätoromanisch Rain, niederländisch Rijn, lateinisch Rhenus, englisch Rhine, spanisch Rin) ist ein Strom in Europa und entspringt im Kanton Graubünden in den Schweizer Alpen. Sein Einzugsgebiet umfasst den größten Teil der Schweiz, ganz Liechtenstein sowie weite Teile Deutschlands und der Niederlande, dazu Gebiete im Osten Frankreichs und im Westen Österreichs sowie Gebiete in Belgien und Italien. Die größten zum rheinischen Fluss-System gehörenden Flüsse sind die Aare, die Mosel, der Neckar, der Main und, je nach Definition des Stromsystems, auch die Maas. Der Rhein ist der längste Nordseezufluss und eine der verkehrsreichsten Wasserstraßen der Welt.
