The essay is the smaller stamp on the left side of the picture.

The Tongan officials asked Walsall Security Printers of London, UK to design a stamp to celebrate the new milennium in 2000 - this was important to Tonga as the islanders consider themselves to be the first to see each new day since they are very close to the international dateline.

The printers came up with a design of a small stamp (the essay at left in the picture) and even printed one sheet of 20 values which was to be checked by the Tongan officials before the main printing run could begin.

The Tongan officials got back to the printers advising that the small essay they received wasn't special enough for such an important issue and to come up with something a bit more special and larger in size. So the printers decided to make the essay stamp much larger (so they could use the design they had already created) but add another stamp to make a se-tenant pair as shown by the specimen pair at the right side of the picture.

NOTE - the specimen pair of the issued se-tenant pair is not part of this listing, but is only shown in the picture to show the difference in size of the issued pair to the essay stamp at the left. The item for sale with this listing is the ESSAY stamp at the left of which there were only 20 in the essay sheet. This is a very scarce item from the printers archival material.

So that the essay sheet could not be used a postage, each stamp in the essay sheet was overprinted specimen.

Australia Post SMALL international registration envelope - 10.00 euros - used for smaller items and smaller covers.

Australia Post LARGE international registration envelope - 16.00 euros - used for larger items and larger covers. NOTE there is no tracking with registered letters. Tracking costs a little bit more.

On certain occasions if large total is purchased, tracking may be required and I will advise the cost - currently it is 21.00 euros

NOTE - IMPORTANT - WHEN REGISTRATION IS COMPULSORY

Registration fee MUST be paid when:-

1. Total cost of items purchased is over 60 euros.
