ARCHIVE FROM HMS VICTORIA/HOLLOWAY/HOSKINS/TRYON/BATTENBERG/MOORFIELDS HOSPITAL
A unique archive of nine letters including a menu from HMS Victoria, a CDV and 2 calling cards of B.H. Holloway who worked as a steward on board the ironclad destroyer HMS Victoria. He was firstly steward to Admiral Sir A.H. Hoskins, KCB (1828-1901), and then steward to Hoskins\' successor Admiral Sir George Tryon KCB (1823-93). His wife to whom the letters are addressed appears to have acted as housekeeper to Grand Duke Louis of Battenberg (1854-1921, and his wife Victoria (1863-1950), whilst in Malta. They seem to have been held in much esteem by Tryon and Battenberg as can be seen in the correspondence, so much so that after the death of Holloway on board HMS Victoria in 1893, his wife appealed for help to the widow of Tryon as she had no means of support and her eyesight was beginning to fail her. Lady Tryon in turn happily assisted in obtaining an appointment at Moorfield\'s Eye Hospital for Holloway\'s wife.
