THE RED-CLOISTER SITE, "BELGIUM EUROPE"
As we know from the excavations that took place on the site, the Red Cloister, on the edge of the Soignies Forest close to Brussels, bears witness to a rich historical past. At the time of its influence (from the 15th to the 18th century), the priory, religious community under the authority of a prior (director), welcomed many scholars, historians or theologians, as well as the famous painter Hugo Van der Goes. The remarkable manuscripts, illuminations and binding, made in the fifteenth century, gave an extraordinary reputation to the site. At the end of the 19th century, the site became a paradise for artists, who, attracted by the charm of the old abbey, frequent the place. Recently, a project to renovate the site was set up, marked by the desire to find the right balance between the preservation of the natural heritage and the archaeological and architectural heritage.
