Polish Madonnas - souvenir decorative booklet with two stamps MNH**
On 12 August 2022, two postage stamps worth PLN 4.50 of the 'Polish Madonnas' issue were put into circulation.
The first stamp shows an image of Our Lady of Smiles from Pszów.
The image of Our Lady of Smiles from Pszów dates from the early 18th century and is a copy of the image of Our Lady of Jasna Góra in Częstochowa, purchased for the parish church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in 1722. It was purchased for the parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1722. Multiple repaintings, the last in 1976, have changed the original character of the image. In 2002, the image was crowned in the name of Pope John Paul II.
The second stamp depicts the image of Our Lady of Dzierżoniów, whose painting is located in the church of St George in Dzierżoniów. It was made in fresco technique in about 1500 (format about 40 x 50 cm).
The image of Our Lady and Child was discovered during conservation work carried out in the church's interior in 2008. It forms part of a modest altarpiece located in the eastern corner of the south aisle. According to preserved documents, there used to be a cult of the image of Mary in the church, which was called ,,Salve Regina" after the first words of the hymn, which in Polish translation reads: Hello Queen, Mother of Mercy. This is where the modern title for the discovered image of Mary came from: Our Lady of Dzierżoniów - Mother of Mercy.
